What is A Gloss?
Gloss, toner, glaze… what’s the difference?
A gloss is a demi-permanent hair color that is used to correct/shift tones and adds shine to the hair. Glossing is a term that is used interchangeably with a toner or glaze. They are all technically the same thing, although not all are created equally.
There are acidic demi-permanent products and alkaline ones. The acidic colors dont have lifting capabilities, it mainly targets and evens out more porous/highlighted hair, but can also deepen natural hair color without using permanent color. Alkaline demi-permanent colors can sometimes lift up to 1 level on natural hair depending on the strength of developer used. If you are wanting to go darker with a gloss, an alkaline toner can last a little longer, as it penetrates deeper into the hair cuticle.
You can also get a clear gloss if you want to soften and add shine to your hair without changing the color!
Using demi-permanent for an all over color change (at the same level or darker) is a great alternative to permanent hair color - it grows out so much softer than permanent color, can offer up to 70% grey coverage (sometimes more), and is healthier for the hair.
Demi-permanent vs Permanent hair color
There is a misconception that permanent hair color lasts longer than demi-permanent, and while that can sometimes be true depending on a few factors, all artificial color fades from the hair, including permanent color. The main difference between demi-permanent and permanent hair color is that permanent color has stronger lifting capabilities (it is more alkaline!). It can lift 1-4 levels of the natural hair.
